Why You Should Buy An Ugly Chair. . .

One of my readers emailed asking for my thoughts on a set of these chairs she bought on Craigslist for a steal:

I suggested she start by painting the frame.  Not only did she do that, but she went and upholstered the chairs herself, adding her own special touch.  Fortunately, she was nice enough to send me follow up pictures of how they turned out.

She used this pricier version by Ballard Designs for her inspiration:

Louis XVI Square Back Arm Chair

She painted the frame and slightly distressed it:

And, instead of investing a lot of money into reupholstering, she recovered them herself using canvas drop cloths:

And, my favorite part. . . She painted two stripes directly on the backs:

Thanks, J, for sharing this project.  For  more details, you can visit her blog by clicking on the image below.

  17. I love "ugly" chairs! I love that a little imagination and some hard work can yield such amazing results. This was a beautiful DIY too. I'm really impressed with how great a job she did. All that stapling and gluing scares me a little bit! Thanks for sharing. :-)
